Alfalfa (VE) – Aqieloo

Alfalfa is the moniker of Nicolás Sánchez, a Venezuelan artist born in Mérida whose intricate line work draws from vintage etchings and engravings to create invented bestiaries - mythological hybrids of animals, birds, insects, and human features. His cross-contour drawing technique gives flat surfaces an almost sculptural depth. He came to Vienna for the Calle Libre Festival in 2017, where both editions were produced.

Aqieloo takes its name from Achelous, the shape-shifting Greek river god - fitting for an artist obsessed with hybrid creatures and metamorphosis. Three-color screen print on Favini Crush Kiwi paper, whose green-flecked, organic surface complements the mythological subject matter.
