Nina Buchner is a Vienna-based comic artist and illustrator, born 1988 in Wiener Neustadt. She self-publishes through micro publishing house HOUSE BOOKS. Her body of work is populated by anthropomorphic molluscs and fruit – planarians, slugs, durians – protagonists who navigate both the banality of daily life and existential crises with equal bewilderment. In 2019, she presented “Kung Fruit” at our Jan Arnold Gallery.

This print extracts elements from the Kung Fruit narrative – a berserk durian mobbing unsuspecting fruit, who strike back and make a horrendous discovery – and reframes them as a two-color screen print on grey cardboard. Arcimboldo painted fruit as human faces in the 16th century; Buchner reverses the equation, giving fruit human anxieties. The grey photo cardboard grounds the absurdist imagery in something tangible and raw.
