Axel Schindler is a Vienna-based artist who started out in illustration and graphic design, trained at die Graphische, before evolving into painting. His earlier work merged manga precision with 1960s pop aesthetics – consumer society dissected with dry humor in bold linework and flat color fields. Over time, his practice has shifted towards a more painterly language, but the graphic roots remain visible. He participated in the Calle Libre Festival in 2022 and collaborated on the Calle Libre x United Nations mural at the Vienna International Centre in 2024.
Troubadour dates from 2020 and captures Schindler’s graphic period at its sharpest: the wandering medieval musician rendered in bold linework and flat color fields, part street art poster, part illuminated manuscript. Three inks on Pergraphica paper – every color earning its place.
