Anton Hudo is a Ukrainian artist from Kyiv who turned to drawing in 2007 as rehabilitation after a stroke – what began as therapy became a full artistic practice rooted in what he calls “social thriller aesthetics.” His densely layered compositions draw on medieval engravings and address burning social issues with unflinching directness. In June 2022, we invited Hudo to Vienna as Streetartpassage Artist in Residence at the MuseumsQuartier, where he painted on site and presented new work at the Jan Arnold Gallery.
Filthy and Fury in its rainbow gradient version transforms Hudo’s characteristically dark graphic language with an unexpected chromatic shift. The same tangled figures and grotesque forms that recall Dürer’s apocalyptic woodcuts now pulse with color – as if a medieval engraving was caught in a UV light.
