Alfalfa is the moniker of Nicolás Sánchez, a Venezuelan artist born in Mérida whose intricate line work draws from vintage etchings and engravings to create invented bestiaries – mythological hybrids of animals, birds, insects, and human features. His cross-contour drawing technique gives flat surfaces an almost sculptural depth. He came to Vienna for the Calle Libre Festival in 2017, where both editions were produced.
Elf distills Alfalfa’s bestiary into a three-color risograph on Olin paper – the format’s natural grain and slight registration shifts adding to the handmade quality of his intricate line work.
