Robert Bodnar is a Vienna-based artist born in Prague, trained in fine arts and photography under Eva Schlegel and in art and film under Harun Farocki at the University of Fine Arts Vienna. His work investigates the “photographic condition” — the intersection of light, material, process, and apparatus, treating photography less as image-making and more as scientific inquiry. Self-built camera parts, complex calculations, and special materials are central to his practice. He presented his work in an exhibition at the Jan Arnold Gallery, where this edition was produced.
Photogram 2/2 translates Bodnar’s camera-less photographic process into screen printing — metallic pigments on heavy paper creating an image that exists somewhere between photograph and abstract object. The photogram technique dates back to Man Ray and László Moholy-Nagy, who bypassed the camera entirely through direct light exposure. Bodnar continues that tradition with contemporary, research-driven rigor. Single-color metallic pigment screenprint on Munken Pure paper, signed, numbered, and blindstamped.
