Rudolf Fitz is a Vienna-based painter whose body of work revolves around the city’s disappearing streetscape – abandoned storefronts, fading signage, nostalgic facades that blend memory with fiction. His large-scale oil canvases create what feel like portals into a parallel Vienna, one that’s half-remembered, half-invented. We’ve worked with Fitz extensively – from the NO OPENING 03 exhibition with Ben Reyer to the Artist Check-In at Hotel Altstadt curated together with the Jan Arnold Gallery, the Living Studio residency at the MuseumsQuartier, and the “Alles wird gut” public intervention during lockdown.
Nachtschicht captures one of Fitz’s fictional shopfronts at night – the yellow IQ Color paper radiating the warm glow of a late-hours storefront against the darkness. Six colors of screen print ink at 100×70cm give this piece a presence closer to his oil paintings than a typical print. The title – “night shift” – fits the mood of these places that seem to exist outside normal hours, somewhere between Edward Hopper’s lonely storefronts and a half-forgotten Viennese Greißlerei.
