Fresh Max is a Vienna-based artist from Scharten in Upper Austria who channels the kitsch and charm of Austrian everyday culture into bold, flashy work. Faded store windows, one-euro shops, Würstelstand romance, Tom Turbo, Simpsons quotes, GTA Vice City — studying at the University of Applied Arts gave him the technical toolkit, but the real education happened on the street. His paintings and prints mine the intersection of provincial identity and urban graffiti culture with an eye for the gloriously trashy.

No Kangaroos in Austria riffs on the country's most ubiquitous souvenir-shop slogan — the kind of tongue-in-cheek national self-awareness that Erwin Wurm brought to Austrian sculpture, here applied with spray-can energy and pop-art directness. Three-color screenprint on BioTop paper.
