Jumu Monster is the artistic alias of Jurena Muñoz Lagunas, a Berlin-based artist with South American roots whose colorful, bold compositions explore the intersection of humanity, empowered femininity, the spirit world, and nature. Her practice spans painting, murals, masks, and ceramics. In 2021, she painted a wall at the Vienna World Museum as part of the “Re:Present” exhibition in cooperation with the Calle Libre Festival. She returned to Vienna as Q21 Artist-in-Residence at our Jan Arnold Gallery in late 2022.

Condor y Toro – the condor and the bull, two totemic animals of South American mythology – reproduces Jumu’s World Museum wall painting as a seven-color screen print. At 100 x 70 cm, the translation from wall to paper preserves the mural’s ambition: seven ink layers building up the richly layered chromatic world that defines her practice. Like Diego Rivera’s murals condensed to edition format, the composition carries the weight of cultural storytelling.
