Matthias Ramsey studied painting at Vienna’s University of Applied Arts while simultaneously pursuing biology and zoology at the University of Vienna — a dual education that runs through every aspect of his work. His practice sits at the intersection of art and natural science, exploring how humans perceive and interact with their environment.
A tangled Bank takes its title from the famous closing passage of Darwin’s On the Origin of Species, where a humble riverbank teeming with life becomes a metaphor for the interconnectedness of all organisms. Ramsey follows in the footsteps of Ernst Haeckel, the 19th-century biologist whose Kunstformen der Natur blurred the line between scientific illustration and fine art — but where Haeckel sought symmetry and order, Ramsey embraces the tangle. Single-color screenprint on Pergraphica paper.
