Numskull is the alias of Sydney-based artist Elliott Routledge, known for the interplay of hard, bold color fields and soft gradients - a contrast that runs through all his work. His Vienna compositions centered on patterns and drapery folds, fabric rendered in graphic abstraction draped over statuesque figures. In 2014, we invited him as Q21 Artist-in-Residence at the MuseumsQuartier, where he presented „BUST!“ at our gallery space - an exhibition exploring the human obsession with beauty and the everyday struggle to keep up appearance.

Saint Sebastian reimagines one of art history's most painted martyrs - depicted by everyone from Mantegna's stoic pierced youth to Guido Reni's ecstatic upward gaze - through Numskull's signature abstracted anatomy. Bold color fields and fragmented forms replace Renaissance chiaroscuro, but the tension between beauty and suffering that has drawn artists to this subject for five centuries remains intact. Three-color screenprint produced during his Vienna residency.
