Stephen Tompkins is an American painter and experimental animator whose work deconstructs cartoon imagery, comic art, and vintage animation into what he calls "organic associative assemblages." With a background in philosophy and semiotics, his surreal compositions connect the sublime and the ridiculous - as MCASD curator Robin Clark put it. Represented by Galerie Ernst Hilger in Vienna, he presented a solo exhibition "Reanimated" at our Jan Arnold Gallery in 2016, curated by Artis.Love.
Love is a Hawt Dawg From Hell riffs on Bukowski's poetry collection "Love is a Dog from Hell" - recast through Tompkins' cartoon-surrealist lens into something between pop art homage and philosophical joke. The glitter edition adds a layer of gaudy sparkle to the already overloaded imagery, pushing the excess further. Three-color screen print on Munken Pure, edition of just 10.
