Martin Tardy is a Vienna-based artist of Austrian-French descent, born 1992, whose practice follows a single rule: the pen never leaves the paper. His continuous line drawings trace the human body in unbroken gestures — a technique rooted in Picasso’s single-line portraits and Matisse’s figure studies, but taken further. Tardy often draws with both hands simultaneously, turning each work into a performance. This is his first screen print series, produced in close collaboration with LEAP — the artist selected three works from his private collection to be reproduced on carefully chosen papers.

Thinking Man captures a standing male figure mid-thought — head tilted, one arm drawn across the chest — in a single unbroken line on white Fabriano Accademia paper. The pose evokes Rodin’s Le Penseur, but where Rodin’s thinker is compressed muscle and weight, Tardy’s is pure line: weightless, restless, never quite settling into the form. At 150x75cm, the print preserves the full scale and immediacy of the original drawing. One-color screen print.

The original hangs permanently in the entrance hall of Tardy’s Vienna studio. He pulled it from his first solo show mid-exhibition — “I saw it perfectly installed all by itself on a huge worn-down industrial wall, and I decided in the midst of the show: this piece won’t be for sale. I simply couldn’t imagine giving it away.”
