WizardSkull is a Brooklyn-based artist who came up through New York’s skateboard subculture, designing over 200 board graphics before moving into fine art and street work. His wheat-pasted “Sexy Ronald” — a muscular reimagining of Ronald McDonald — went viral and introduced his work to a global audience. In 2018, we invited him to Vienna as Streetartpassage Artist in Residence at the MuseumsQuartier, where he painted two large-scale murals and presented a solo exhibition at our Jan Arnold Gallery.
Garfield was the first print in the series — created during WizardSkull’s 2018 residency in Vienna and the only edition to carry a blindstamp. Jim Davis designed Garfield in 1978 as the perfectly marketable character: no edge, no surprise, engineered for syndication. WizardSkull puts the edge back in — the fat cat dissolves into swirling orange against cyan, tongue out, half-lidded eyes barely holding on. What Davis built for mass reproduction, WizardSkull deconstructs in a limited run of 36. Five-color screen print on Munken Pure paper.
